The Scandal at Mayerling returns for Spring 2027
Scottish Ballet is thrilled to announce that our acclaimed production The Scandal at Mayerling will return to Scottish theatres in 2027, bringing one of history’s most gripping royal scandals back to the stage.
This powerful two‑act ballet delves into the final, turbulent years of Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria‑Hungary. Set within the glittering yet claustrophobic world of the Habsburg court, the story follows Rudolf’s spiraling state of mind, his destructive relationships, and his intense connection with the young Mary Vetsera — a path that leads to the infamous events at the Mayerling hunting lodge.

A bold reimagining of Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s celebrated masterpiece, Scottish Ballet’s production places Rudolf’s fractured psyche at the centre of the drama. The choreography demands extraordinary physical and emotional range from the dancers, capturing the volatility, desire, and despair that shaped the prince’s final days.
Designer Elin Steele’s sumptuous sets and costumes evoke the opulence of imperial Vienna while revealing the shadows beneath its surface. Franz Liszt’s sweeping Romantic score, performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra, drives the story with a rich and dramatic musical landscape.
