Gifting shares
Did you know Scottish Ballet can accept gifts of shares? This may be a tax efficient way of giving during your lifetime that appeals to you.
Below is a summary of the key points regarding gifts of investments (shares) to charity and the related tax considerations.
Eligible Assets
A wide variety of assets can be donated to charity, including cash and publicly listed shares, both of which may qualify for valuable tax reliefs.
Tax Reliefs for Donors
Income Tax Relief
Income tax relief is available at your marginal rate when donating publicly listed shares, cash, or other qualifying assets to a charity. Please note that privately held shares do not qualify for this relief. If your income is coming from an investment portfolio check your breakdown of income/capital. For example, if you are a Higher Rate taxpayer (40%) and you gift £100,000 of shares, you can reduce your income tax by £40,000 (£100k x 40%).
Capital Gains Tax Relief
When assets that have increased in value are transferred to a charity, the donor is exempt from capital gains tax. In some cases, income tax relief may also be available. This means you do not have to pay capital gains tax on land, property, or shares you give to charity.
Inheritance Tax Relief
Any assets transferred into a charitable trust are excluded from your estate for inheritance tax (IHT) purposes. In addition, if you leave at least 10% of your estate to charity in your will, the IHT rate payable on your taxable estate can be reduced from 40% to 36%.
Please note that the information above is based on our current understanding of UK tax law, which may be subject to change. We recommend all donors seek independent tax advice before proceeding.
Making Your Donation
Please transfer the shares (minimum £1,000) into Scottish Ballet’s name (Scottish Ballet Endowment Fund – Registered SCI049065). In the majority of all cases, shares will be sold on day one of receipt by Cazenove Capital, the largest charity investment manager in the UK.
