Classes FAQs
I’ve never danced before; do you need to have any previous dance experience to attend a class?
No previous ballet experience is needed for previous ballet experience is needed to join our Absolute Beginners class. For all other classes some experience is required and is outlined in each of the class descriptions.
Can I join the class at any time?
For Absolute Beginners, you cannot join after the first three weeks of term. For all other in-person classes and online classes you can join at anytime.
Do you offer discounts?
We receive no funding to run these classes so we charge a flat fee per class. There are no concessions or discounts for booking multiple classes.
Are classes paid weekly or by term?
All classes need to be paid for the full term at the time of booking.
What do classes cost?
In-studio ballet 60 minute classes are £13.50 per class. Improvers and Intermediate 75 minute classes are £15.50. Regenerate (60+ yrs) classes are £10.00 per class.
All online classes are £12.00 per class except Regenerate (60 yrs+) which is £8.50 per class.
Dance for Parkinson’s and Elevate® are £5.50 per class (£4.50 for online-only hybrid participants).
Time To Dance and Long Covid Support classes are free of charge.
The length of terms vary please check website for current term costs.
Can I have a refund?
We offer limited refunds for classes depending on how far in advance your booking is cancelled. Please note, there is an administration charge for any refund. The full refund policy can be found in the Classes & Workshops section of our terms and conditions
If I have an injury/illness can I still participate?
If you have any health issues, we advise you to consult your GP before starting any form of exercise. When you book one of our classes you are required to provide any medical information that relates to taking part in a physical dance class. Participants take classes at their own risk. We may require a doctor’s confirmation that your participation is approved.
How old is everyone in the class?
Our adult classes are for people aged 16+ and participants’ ages vary greatly across all the classes. There is no upper age limit. Our Regenerate classes are for those over 60 only.
Are you allowed to take photos or film during the class?
No filming, photography or recording is permitted in any of the classes.
Is it strictly ballet in the classes?
All our adult ballet classes teach classical technique. In our SB Health classes we use a range of styles and creative techniques to safely explore themes and movement from SB productions.
Do classes work towards examinations?
No. Classes at Scottish Ballet will cover technique and creativity to varying degrees but are not syllabus-based or intended to prepare you for ballet grade exams.
Who are the teachers?
All our teachers are qualified and include a mix of former and current professional dancers. They are highly experienced and trained to teach dance safely.
Is there a waiting list for the classes that are fully booked?
We do not hold waiting lists for our adult ballet classes apart from our Dance Health classes. Sometimes spaces become available in our sold-out adult classes, and we will put them back on sale on the website. Please keep checking the website if you wish to book into a class that is currently sold-out.

Do the online classes have live music?
Yes, all adult ballet classes are accompanied by a pianist. Dance Health classes have either a pianist or a percussionist.
Do I need to bring my booking confirmation with me?
There is no need to bring your email confirmation; once you have booked your name will be added to a register. Please make sure that, if booking a Zoom class, the name you register with matches your Zoom account name.
Can I transfer to a different class if I’m finding the one I’m in too challenging/not challenging enough?
If spaces are available you may be able to transfer to another class. To enquire, please contact classes@scottishballet.co.uk.
It is not a requirement for Scottish Ballet to transfer classes but we will help if we can. Please note there is a £5 administration charge to transfer classes.
Where do the classes take place?
All in-studio classes take place at Tramway and all online classes take place on Zoom. Details of how to attend your class, either in-studio or online, will be emailed to you in advance of the start date.
What should I wear for class?
Please wear comfortable clothing in which you can move easily. You can wear soft-soled ballet shoes or dance in bare feet, depending on the type of flooring your dancing on, in the studio or at home. We recommend that long hair be tied up.
What if I’m running late?
We ask that you are ready to join the class and start on time. We do not admit anyone who is more than 15 minutes late for either studio or online classes, as you will have missed the warm up.
How many participants are in the class?
The number of participants varies depending on class level and type of class.
Do you cater for anyone with additional support needs?
Yes, we aim to provide classes which are accessible to all. Please let us know the type of additional support you require so that we can arrange personal assistance if needed. We try our best to provide a positive learning environment for everyone.
