Winning the Genée gold medal at the Fonteyn International Ballet Competition 2024, was definitely an ‘ I did it’ moment
What career moment are you most proud of?
I have two which I can’t decide between! The first would have to be when I got my phone call from Christopher Hampson, after my audition to say I had been offered a contract with the Scottish Ballet- I was with my mum at the time and it is a moment I will never forget!!
The second would be, winning the Genée gold medal at the Fonteyn International Ballet Competition 2024, as it was definitely an ‘ I did it’ moment and was such an amazing experience to perform alongside a group of extremely talented dancers at His Majesty’s Theatre. A highlight was definitely being able to share this with all of my family back at home, as well as my teachers and peers from school, as the final was live-streamed.
What’s your favourite place in Scotland (and why) ?
My favourite place in Scotland would have to be my hometown Crieff, as it is the town where I grew up. I love living in the countryside and going home after a full day in the city.
What’s your favourite ballet to watch (and why)?
My favourite ballet to watch would have to be Swan Lake. I love the contrast of the Odette/ Odile character and the differing demands/ characterisation required of the ballerina and the intense physicality needed- particularly the ‘Black Swan Coda’ in the ballet.
What do you like to do on your days off?
On my days off I love to take a complete break from ballet. Nothing for me beats a Netflix and chill day, where I can curl up under a big blanket and do nothing. I also love to read, do some retail therapy, drink coffee, find new cafés to try and be a tourist visiting new places.
What’s something people might not know about you?
I am one of six children, who are all younger than me – so my home is very chaotic 24/7!!
What’s the funniest thing that’s happened on stage/in the studio?
When I was 9 years old, I played the part of a ‘Bon Bon’ in the Nutcracker and as our exit, five of us were required to do a series of backflips off stage…as you can imagine, during our last show we did so into one another and finished the piece in a heap on the floor.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Don’t take yourself so seriously and enjoy the process . Also don’t worry about not being in the same place/ doing what other people your age are, not everyone’s journeys are linear, and you can get to the same destination if you love what you do and are willing to put the work in that it takes.
What makes you smile?
So much makes me smile!! Seeing my dogs when I come home, spending time with family and friends, a good turning day, achieving a goal I’ve worked hard for, a cup of coffee…pretty much everything!!
