We are thrilled to welcome Harvey Littlefield to the Scottish Ballet family as he joins us as an Artist.

Harvey was born in Kent, England, but he grew up in Glasgow where he trained at Scottish Ballet’s Junior Associates programme, The Dance School of Scotland and then The English National Ballet School in London. After working with The Norwegian National Ballet Junior Company, he joined Scottish Ballet.

We chatted to Harvey about how he’s enjoying life at Scottish Ballet so far, and what he’s most looking forward to.

Five minutes with… Harvey Littlefield

As a young dancer you trained with Scottish Ballet’s Junior Associate programme. Can you tell us about your experience?

Scottish Ballet’s Junior Associates was my very first time experiencing ballet. For me it’s probably one of the most positive experiences I’ve had with dance as it made me realise that I wanted to pursue a career in ballet. At first I just loved moving and dancing in the studios, but as classes got more challenging I really enjoyed the technical side of ballet.

What brought you back to Scottish Ballet?

Scottish Ballet has always been on my radar as a company I wanted to be part of. The mix of classical and contemporary rep is really interesting, and I like how versatile the dancers are too – this was a big draw for me.

I also think there is something really special about the fact I get to dance and tour with the national company of the country I grew up in. It makes me feel really proud, as in the world of ballet you often go where you are needed and don’t really get the opportunity to be part of a company on your own doorstep.

Tell us about your first week in the studio with Scottish Ballet…

I was nervous to begin with as due to the pandemic, it had been some time since I was in the environment of rehearsals and class, but I felt so welcomed in the studio and amongst all the dancers and staff. Everyone here is super kind and really helpful.

You joined the company ahead of The Nutcracker. What was your experience like rehearsing for this iconic production?

It was really exciting to be part of and see the production come together, especially as I had seen it as a child. The process was really enjoyable and I loved beginning my time here with The Nutcracker as it’s such a special ballet for so many.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I love spending time with family and friends, watching Goldie Hawn films and listening to Mariah Carey. I also love to go out-out, but of course not on week days!

What production are you most looking forward to performing in 2022?

I’m really looking forward to The Scandal at Mayerling. It’s such a big ballet and will be a challenge, but really exciting at the same time. I love ballets that tell a dramatic story and have lots of acting incorporated into the production. I can’t wait to be involved but also watch the ballet too!
