Sophie Laplane was born in Paris, France and trained at The Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris and Paris Opera Ballet School. She joined Scottish Ballet in 2004, remaining a dancer with the company until 2017, when she became Scottish Ballet’s Resident Choreographer.

In 2026, the production is scheduled to perform at Sadler’s Wells, London, Lincoln Center, New York, and Spoleto Festival USA, where the ballet receives its US premiere.

Sophie choreographed Ralph Fiennes’ production of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin (2026) for the Paris Opera, and Netia Jones’ Le Nozze di Figaro (2022, revived 2025). Recent work includes If at First for Ballet Black, which toured the UK in 2024, and choreography for Scottish Ballet’s The Nutcracker (2024).

With Oh! Les Mains, Sophie was a double prize-winner at the Concours de Jeunes Chorégraphes, Biarritz 2022. Her other creations for Scottish Ballet include Oxymore (Edinburgh Festival 2013), Maze (winning Best Screen Dance Short at the 2015 San Francisco Dance Film Festival), and Sibilo (2016, later performed at Joyce Theatre New York in 2020). Dextera (2019) was revived for Scottish Ballet’s 2025 tour of New Zealand/Aotearoa. Her short dance film Dive (2021), co-created with James Bonas and directed by Oscar Sansom, was an Official Selection at Venice Biennale 2021 and won the Jury Prize for Best Film at Cinedans 2022.
