Technical Apprentice
24 months
What we’re looking for
Are you looking for a vocational learning opportunity in an interesting and unusual work environment? Would you like a unique insight into what happens backstage at the theatre? Are you keen to learn more about Technical (backstage) roles within the Performing Arts?
If so, we are recruiting our very first Technical Apprentice at Scottish Ballet who will start working with us in Spring 2025. This is an opportunity for you to join our Technical team and work in a fun, creative and friendly environment. Informal mentoring and informal assessment are both key components.
We want to hear from you if you are ready to start your Technical Theatre career through on-the-job learning.
Scottish Ballet welcomes applications from all communities and backgrounds, building a diverse workforce that reflects the people of Scotland. We provide specialist support for those who have experienced discrimination or face barriers to inclusion.
What you will learn
With support from both Scottish Ballet and Edinburgh College, the desired collective outcome (and individual benefit to you) will be the successful achievement of a Modern Apprenticeship SCQF Level 7.
Through a blend of (paid) work experience and learning outcomes, you will acquire key skills and confidence which will enable you to be a trusted team player working to a high standard, in line with both Scottish Ballet standards and the required Health & Safety standards.
Day-to-day, you can expect to get involved with our lighting, sound & video team, our technicians and stage crew (e.g. scenic carpentry, metal fabrication, stage prop maintenance), our stage management team (who support both rehearsals and our live shows), and to support our wardrobe team (manual handling) too.
What you need to know
This is the very first time a Technical Apprentice will join us to learn and develop their confidence, their knowledge and professional skills through (paid) on-the-job learning.
The Technical team supports the smooth running and successful delivery of all of our touring productions, representing Scottish Ballet and indeed Scotland on a world stage.
In a nutshell, we want to hear from you if you:
- Have an interest in technical subjects
- Have sound computer skills
- Are a good communicator with a customer service approach
- Have a keen eye for detail, working to a high standard
- Work well as a member of a team, including positive working relationships
- Like working in a friendly environment, and interacting with lots of different people
- Enjoy a new challenge (a pragmatic and logical thinker)
It’s a full-time apprenticeship offered for a temporary two-year period:
- Salary is £21,840 per annum
- The role is full time (35 hours per week)
- Flexibility (with notice) of working hours to accommodate travel, touring, performances and other events in the evenings and at weekends
